From distillery to brewerhouse - Peters am Hahnentor

Perhaps some of you still know the legendary Brennerei Weiß on Rudolfplatz? The place had its heyday until the early 2000s. It was mainly the gay scene that met here to start the evening before moving on to Schaafenstrasse, to the clubs or saunas in our city. Then this era came to an end, the building stood empty for a long time, and attempts to revive it failed miserably. It's a shame, because the place is really nice. But since last year, luckily, life has returned here: Peters am Hahnentor has moved in!

A new golden age for breweries

Times are changing, it has always been like this and it will always be like this. But as the saying goes in our Cologne elementary law: It has always been good! And so we are experiencing a new golden age for breweries, which we at Cologne Guide don't think is such a bad thing. With Peters in Hahnentor, new opportunities are slowly opening up for a completely new brewery tour along the ring. We'll keep you updated. ;-)

Kölsch brewery on Düsseldorf soil?

But first a little about the history of Peters Kölsch. As some of you probably know, Peters was for a long time one of the Kölsch varieties that was brewed outside of Cologne, namely in Monheim. And in 1975 the unthinkable happened: Monheim was incorporated into Düsseldorf. So for a short time we even had a shared city border with the "evil city with a D"! And a Kölsch that was brewed on Düsseldorf land. That was totally unacceptable! So a lawsuit was filed and after exactly one and a half years Monheim was independent again. Thankfully. The brewery was sold around 20 years ago. Fortunately, the Peters family and the breweries are still with us.

Revival with attention to detail

The names Peters & Bambeck can be found on the Peters logo, but over time the company separated from its partner Bambeck. Peters' flagship was and remains, of course, the Peters Brauhaus in the old town , but expansion was already planned before Corona. But the property at Hahnentor was not easy to get. The owner of the house refused to sell the property; the rent expectations were too high for many restaurateurs. After his death, the community of heirs was finally able to decide to sell and an agreement was reached with the Peters family. Finally, the beautiful location could once again be enriched with gastronomic life!

Well, almost. First came Corona. But they didn't let that stop them either. With great attention to detail, as we are used to from the brewery in the old town, the house was brought up to scratch. The ceremonial opening finally took place in October last year. Peters am Hahnentor not only impresses with its fantastic brewery cuisine (warning: there are no fries here, we're sticking with traditional cuisine!), the furnishings are also of course typical of a brewery. The interior design was created by the senior of the house, Hans Peters, himself . And like the original in Mühlengassse, there is also an impressive mural with well-known Cologne personalities. And right at the entrance, just like in the old town, Heinz Köbes greets you. We can also tell you a little about the history of the little elves when we stop off at Peters together!

Cologne feeling, Cologne carnival

The house attracts with regular Cologne musical events, and with its 180 seats, you're sure to find the right spot for you. And outdoor lovers will be happy to be able to sit on the terrace all year round. If you prefer something a little more civilized at Carnival, Peters am Hahnentor is also a good place for you. Here, it's important not to degenerate into a Ballermann, but to celebrate in a nice, dignified Cologne style! This year on November 11th, Micky Brühl and Marita Kölner will be singing for you!

Conclusion: It’s worth stopping by!

You may also know some of the team around Uwe Esser, who looks after both establishments, from the old town, such as Patrik, who will certainly be delighted to see one or two of the old town guests here again. But even if you have only ever known the delicious Peters Kölsch from the swing-top bottle, you should definitely pay the new shop a visit. And until we have designed a new tour along the rings, you are welcome to join us on one of our tours through the old town or along the Eigelstein on our Krätzjer tour with Hans Breuer . We look forward to seeing you!
